Discussion Group
Next monthly discussion: 6.30pm Monday 2nd August Dr Alex Wonhas, Director, Energy Transformed Flagship CSIRO.

In order to staff and direct our volunteer run campaign we need the support of the philanthropic sector. As the leading climate change solutions-focused campaign in Australia we serve a niche that will appeal to grantmakers who want their funding to drive serious change in community attitudes, understanding of the science and serious climate action on the ground enacted through policy changes that we Beyond Zero Emissions can activate and facilitate. Given our strengths in this area all we now need is you to investigate, research and seek the opportunities to co-deliver the environmental and social outcomes in our and our potential funders' visions.
Beyond Zero is predominately a volunteer run campaign. However, a paid skeleton staff and the ability to temporarily hire people for completion of certain targetted projects is essential. We also have ongoing campaign costs such as radio show production, phone bills, materials printing and visual prop costs. As the fundraising coordinator you will look to opportunities to raise funds from our existing network and look beyond our campaign's immediate influence for fundraising. You'll develop a team of volunteers to assist in organising and running events and coming up with new, interesting and original ideas to bring in the underlying financial base that we require as a successful campaign. If you think you can make a difference then apply now.
Working closely with the media and campaign coordinator your role is to bring in and understand the needs of volunteers and to match them to the needs and projects of the organisation. You want serious action on climate change. You want a safe zero emissions economy and so do our volunteers. The aim is to enable new and existing volunteers to achieve their best and together succeed in shifting the debate, policy environment and economy to zero emissions. This is a rewarding role working with passionate and dedicated people.
A switched on, internet savvy person is required to get Beyond Zero Emissions' custom content and campaign vibe out on the many social networks. At the moment we have basic coverage on some social networking sites. We want to turn these spaces into campaign hubs on their own. If you like web social networking or want to learn more about it and want us to achieve effective change in getting significant zero emissions action on climate change then this is for you.
A great project to utilise your design skills to create real change in the fight against climate change. This report will be promoted nationally by a large network of organisations and be presented at a major event of the Sustainable Living Festival in February 2010.
Beyond Zeo Emissions is growing in leaps and bounds and we are looking at revamping our membership system and services. We would also like full contact management in order to take advantage of engagement opportunities as they arise. Running an open source online campaign we have identified civicrm as being possibly the best tool to meet our membership needs. (though we're open to alternative suggestions) If you have civicrm or similair database skills and would like to help us solve our membership problem then we need your help asap.
If you are a Drupal or PHP developer WE NEED YOU! We have an ongoing website development plan for a state of the art climate change solutions hub. Many of the team members in Beyond Zero Emissions have come out of the IT, web and graphics industry, so you'll be working with a very competent and capable group.
Description: In 2006-2007 Beyond Zero Emissions launched a very successful campaign where we were able to get over a dozen councils to commit to zero carbon goals by 2020 (Some even by 2015) for their operations, and many councils adopted goals for their communities as well.
Description: This is a newly created BZE social event, a chance for campaigners to stop, relax and enjoy time together while being challenged and educated on all things climate change. We are seeking an individual to coordinate and run these events, appropriate films need to be chosen, they need to be promoted to assure good attendance and the venue prepared (we have an existing venue but can also look at alternatives). This is a very straight forward, enjoyable and rewarding role.
Description: Become a BZE speaker, presenting the good news that a zero carbon economy can be powered by today's know how and technology. Let the world know that "We Can Solve It" For this role you will need to be enthusiastic and upbeat and be prepared to learn. We will offer training so that you can understand the basic facts, figures and technologies and so you can answer the prickly questions. You will also need to work with the team to identify speaking opportunities in order to grow Beyond Zero Emissions' influence and to draw more people into the campaign.
Description: Help promote the Beyond Zero radio program online and to other community radio stations. Beyond Zero is the bi-weekly program produced at the studios of community radio 3CR and relayed around Australia on the community radio network via satellite. We are now also international with Mountain Area Radio in North Carolina now taking our program weekly. We would like to expand this to 100s of radio stations across the globe. An enthusiastic self starter is neeeded to contact over 150 community Australian radio stations and then many more international stations explaining the show, the kind of audience and the value in running Beyond Zero in their region.
Description: We need to structure a shared calendar space (eg. Google calendar) for all the exciting events, talks, meetings, etc we hold, as well as any pre-recorded interviews we schedule for the radio show. The 'scheduler' will be responsible for updating the calendar. Communication would usually be via email and so this role can be done from any location. An easy but very important job.
We all know about Al Gore's campaign to repower America with 100% zero emissions energy in 10 years. Well, this is your chance to get involved with Australia's version! Beyond Zero Emissions is currently working on producing an extension of our Coal Switch Victorian zero carbon plan, to cover all of Australia. And why should we stop at just stationary energy?
Description: Be reactive to current public debates or create the agenda, this is about specific letter writing & opinion pieces being regularly sent to the newspapers and other media outlets, presenting Beyond Zero Emissions' vision and helping shift the public debate towards avoiding runaway climate change.
Description: Help us develop video content to populate youtube and other video sites. If you are a filmmaker &/or editor we would love to have you on board to help create innovative media which captures the attention and imagination of the public.
Description: Work to create visible and targeted actions that make a difference! In line with Beyond Zero Emissions' strategy to align the movement to zero emissions, communicate to government and create real change on the ground, we require dynamic individuals to work at the "coal face". This will include visible actions in prominent locations such as at MP's offices, as well as media stunts. It involves getting the broader community involved in useful and visible action, and in particular liaison with community climate action groups. This in turn will help influence the public and politicians.
Description: The monthly Beyond Zero Emissions Discussion Group focuses on solutions and is located at Kindness House, 288 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. It is a well established event that has hosted many prominent players in the climate change solutions debate. The coordinator is responsible for setting up the venue on the night and packing up afterwards. Tasks include printing sign-in sheets, flyers, signs, hand-outs for participants, and also organising tea, coffee and nibbles. Some preparation work (via email) may also be required, to respond to RSVPs and questions.
Description: If you are too busy to make an ongoing time commitment, but would like to contribute on short assignments, then this is the job for you! We have a long list of 30-minute radio interviews which need to be transcribed. Interview topics range from solar technologies to housing retro-fits to Arctic ice melts. You can do this at your own pace and who knows, you may even learn something new!
