Beyond Zero Emissions

Adelaide City Council evaluates 2020 zero emission target

Adelaide Councillor Susan Clearihan is after an update on what is required for the council to become carbon neutral, and also how far they have progressed with their current plan. She foresees various opportunities to reduce the council's carbon footprint further, reducing the need to offset which should only be done as a last resort.

City Council eyes zero emissions target

Adelaide City Council will consider whether it can achieve a target of zero emissions for its operations by 2020.

It has requested an update of an environmental sustainability report which outlines what the Council has already achieved.

Councillor Susan Clearihan has requested the update also outline the measures required to achieve a carbon neutral target.

She says the Council could assess ways to achieve more water savings in Adelaide's parklands and plans to install solar-powered street lights.

"Hopefully we can start to show the way for other councils and other parts of the city to follow," she said.

"It's not enough to be seen to be keen. We actually need to be seen to be doing something and being serious about our commitment to environmental sustainability."
