Electricity use going green

Over 50% of Australia's emissions come from the stationary energy sector, the major contributor of which is electricity generated by coal power plants.

By switching to Greenpower you can ensure that your electricity comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar. The actual electrons you use will come from the nearest generator, renewable or otherwise, but somewhere in the national grid renewable energy is being added to the mix equaling the amount you have paid for.

If your house used electricity only and you purchased 100% Greenpower, your house would be a near Zero Emission house!

When buying Greenpower make sure you buy a product that has been accredited by the Government Greenpower scheme and has this logo.

Government accredited Greenpower comes from solar, wind, biomass, hydro and geothermal and contains a minimum of 80% new renewables. This ensures that your power provider will be audited to check that they have bought enough Greenpower to meet the demands of their customers.

You can go further as some Greenpower products are based on 100% new renewables, and hence better to buy if you wish to save the future.

Contact your power provider and ask them about their Greenpower options. If you're not happy, swap electricity providers

see the list of Greenpower providers in your state.

In addition, you can look at the Green Electricity Watch put together by WWF and the environment groups ACF and Total Environment Centre.

We do not recommend you purchase Greenpower from Origin Energy, given their strong opposition to the Victorian Renewable Energy Target scheme (VRET) as outlined in their submission. They seemed more interested in promoting gas.

Victoria's VRET scheme saved the renewable industry in this country.

Setting up a Local Group

The climate change campaign will be successful only if the message about its seriousness and its impacts gets out into our community and people start agitating to do something about it.

Many local groups are being set up around Australia, working specifically on climate change.

If you wish to establish a community group to work on climate change to achieve zero emissions we are happy to offer advice, run an initial meeting and support you once your group is going.

Taking action at

home or in your business

  • Reduce your energy use through behavioral changes and energy efficient technologies.
  • Buy 100% Greenpower.
  • Buy locally grown food and eat less meat and dairy.
  • Choose more sustainable transport options such as walking, riding a bike or using public transport.

Take a look at our Futureenergy.org site for lots of ideas on ways to reduce your climate impact.

"Beyond Al Gore" talks program

Have you seen 'An Inconvenient Truth' and want to know more, or are you interested in learning about climate change? We would like to visit you!

Beyond Zero Emissions, in conjunction with the Zero Emission Network and the Greenleap Strategic Institute, is running a talks program specifically aimed at grassroots community environment groups and grassroots climate action groups.

Topics

  1. Introduction to global warming: Al Gore level education.
  2. Beyond Al Gore: beyond changing light globes, what's really needed.
  3. Why zero emission goal is needed now: Where is the science? What are the consequences of not moving as soon as possible? What are the commercially available solutions? Why your group should adopt the zero emission minus goal.
  4. Campaigning on climate change for the 2007 federal election, how to act autonomously while coordinating your efforts to create a grassroots movement for change. Why this election counts, and why the period before the election may be just as crucial to our future as the period after.
  5. Specific training for climate action groups in all areas of advocacy, operations and campaigning.

We also provide a variety of presentations covering the broad issues surrounding climate change. We can give multimedia talks to schools, groups, businesses or individuals, with the level of information adjusted according to the audience. Topics include:

  • Avoiding a runaway climate event
  • Zero emissions solutions - how to achieve a zero emissions future
  • The science behind choosing a zero emissions target
  • Forests and climate change
  • Plug-in hybrid technology
  • Renewable energy
  • Carbon offsets
  • The imminent risk of rising carbon levels

There is no charge for a BZE talk, though any donation to cover costs would be most welcome.

Testimonials

  • "Adrian Whitehead is a well informed, extremely passionate and engaging presenter. He has presented at two of our Student Environment Conferences over the past three years, his latest presentation being on the Beyond Zero Emissions Campaign. He delivers his testimonials in a humorous and accessible manner that I believe has the correct mix of urgency and hope that inspires us to actually do something!

Adrian is a very approachable person who relates well to students. I would thoroughly recommend him as a speaker for any event."

  • "Adrian Whitehead and Matthew Wright provided an insightful presentation on the role of Alcoa in accelerating global warming. In the blazing afternoon light they kept the interest of our 14-year-old students with many new angles on the problems of aluminium production. In fact, a number of students rated it as their best talk over the weekend of the Earthsharing Challenge. They found the global warming story more pertinent coming from younger people."

Electricity Industry Tour

The tour takes you from Melbourne to South Gippsland before returning via the Latrobe Valley.

You will see sites for potential wind farms, working wind farms, open cut mines and coal power stations.

Issues of climate change, power generation and sustainability in general are discussed.

The tour takes all day and our guide is for free.

Kids Greenhouse Petition

The idea is to have a big petition from kids (people below voting age) to go to grown ups and to go to parliaments and local councils. The petition is asking grown ups to protect kids (and other living things) from global warming.

The petition project has been started by 6-year-old Joey Sutton Preece. He would like to set up a Kids' Committee and get a website going. He is hoping that the petition project will get lots of publicity on radio, TV and newspapers, by the display of stickers and through lots of people talking to each other. The website would have information about climate change and its effects on kids and could also have greenhouse computer games. Joey hopes the petition can be gathered worldwide.

Join the Zero Emission Network

The Zero Emission Network is a network that supports the global campaign to reduce humanity’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and below.

It is an independent alliance of groups, providing opportunities to share ideas, link campaigns and support each other.

If you are involved in an environmental, sporting, social, religious, or community group which understands the need to move to zero emissions please consider joining the network.
